Trying to modify the environment to solve a problem confronting one, to the best advantage of oneself may be taken as an important element in what one considers as the Western approach.
To modify oneself and one's bodily resources in order to maintain a harmonious relationship with the universe in and around may be taken as the outstanding element in what what is called the Eastern approach.
The Devil is a technical term for the capacity to produce very simple and ingenious solutions to problems which it itself creates and which automatically gather further problems needing further solutions with the same in-built capacity to produce problems.
