MENTAL HEALTH - 3

Mind is inevitably coloured, conditioned by what it constantly hears, sees and feels. In turn it constantly seeks actively only to hear, see and feel what it is already accustomed to. Sometimes it is likened to the river which flows freely down the mountain, cuts a bed as it goes on and is then helplessly bound to the bed it itself made.

This fact, this faculty of the mind moulding itself into habits and in turn being bound by the habits is most important for positive mental health. One cannot experiment too freely with the things one exposes one's self to, the books one reads, the company one seeks and keeps, the films one sees. One cannot be too negligent on this question.

Man has learnt the easy way of making money by exploiting the downward trend of man's mental river and in the name of art, creativity and so on flood whole continents with murky products. In the name of reflecting reality faithfully young minds all over the world are being exposed to lurid accounts and exhibits of cruelty, non-restraint and inhumanity. This global corruption is supported by the most powerful audio-visual methods of scientific conditioning of minds. How drug addicts are being produced on mass scale by interested groups is well known. But less well-known is the fact that more insidious and corroding addiction is being peddled in films and books by people who have themselves become blind addicts to money at any cost.

There is a common misunderstanding even amongst the so called cultured that somehow India's backwardness is due to her inhibited culture and codes. The Western films and literature are supposed to be more realistic and therefore beneficial. However, the extremely high rates of suicide in the student population of the United States requires to be taken note of. Indiscriminate, unordered reality is chaos and confusion. Confusion leads to mental and physical death.  The young minds are being exposed mercilessly to a most confusing and chaotic mass of lurid 'reality'. Confusion, lunacy and suicide are the result.
